CRITICAL CAREThe Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Frankfort Regional Medical Center makes maximum use of technologically advanced equipment to monitor and care for patients with acute cardiac and medical/surgical needs. ICU patients require around-the-clock intensive nursing care with continuous monitoring and frequent medical interventions. Frankfort Regional's ICU received the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence, an award given by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). The award is specifically designated to recognize the nation's top pediatric, progressive, and adult critical care units across a multitude of hospitals. Frankfort Regional is one of only two hospitals in Kentucky to receive the coveted designation. Our medical and nursing care team has many years of critical care experience, including seven nurses who are certified in critical care. CCRN certification is one of the most advanced professional credentials that can be achieved by a nurse in the field of critical care. In addition to CCRN certification, our nurses in the ICU have received advanced degrees in nursing education, including masters, BSN and ADN. The unit enjoys a 2:1 patient to nurse ratio, so every patient can receive the highest level of care. With 10 private rooms, the ICU is able to meet the needs of critically ill patients with a wide variety of conditions. In addition, only registered nurses are assigned to work in the unit. Specialized monitors located in the ICU are used for telemetry monitoring of patients requiring close cardiac observation throughout the hospital. This technology allows the staff of the ICU to collaborate with other departments and treat cardiac abnormalities, providing complete comprehensive patient care.
